ABSTRACT:
Objective : To study the effect of methanolic extract of Nigella sativa against multi-drug resistant Staph. aureus in vitro.
Methods : Methanolic extract prepared after soaking N. sativa seeds in methanol for 7 days; tested for antibacterial activity against 34 strains of S. aureus resistant to Amikacin, Tetracycline, Ciprofloxacin, Cotrimoxazole, Ampicillin, Tobramycin, Erythromycin, Gentamicin, Ofloxacin, Gatifloxacin and Cefixime, in pure state and in dilutions using Disc-agar diffusion technique on Muellar-Hinton agar plates under standard laboratory conditions. Strains of S. aureus were isolated from pus, blood, conjunctival or cervical swab etc of various patients.
Results: The methanolic extract showed marked antibacterial activity against 30 strains out of 34.
Conclusion: The methanolic extract of N. sativa showed marked antibacterial activity against resistant Staphylococci.
