ABSTRACT:
Is library reference work an art or a science? Using the culinary arts, one can compare cataloging to baking, where specific elements must be combines in a special manner, whereas reference is like cooking, where one can be more flexible and creative. This generalization really does not hold true, and with anecdotes from my personal experience, I show how reference work is both an art and a science, enlivened by the serendipity.
